The following list details this week's infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.

WiMAX

--Kenya: AccessKenya Group chose Alvarion for a large-scale WiMAX network deployment in the 3.3 GHz band. The network will be designed to provide high-speed residential broadband access in Mombasa and Nairobi.

    The statement above is rather offensive. Just because Kenya is a "poor" country does not mean it should not sign up with the best in the Industry. In fact the dire need of wireless broadband access in developing countries and the resulting innovative applications that will surely result from these deployments fundamentally requires that the system and provider be best of breed. It would be naive to assume that there're are no downward price adjustments but to claim that American companies are paying for 3rd world development is ridiculous to say the least. Alvarion is not doing AccessKenya charity!

    How can Mombasa & Nairobi afford an Alvarion infrastructure? They are "poor" countries and Alvarion is one of the most expensive platforms in the industry? Are American companies paying 3 times the cost in order to subsidize 3rd world development?
