Gemalto, the world’s largest SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card maker, is taking steps to expand the mobile contactless payment space – and get its technology an even broader footprint. The company announced a strategic licensing agreement with NXP Semiconductors N.V., (NXPI) as well as a mobile payments trial in Singapore.
Under the pact with NXP, Gemalto will integrate NXP’s MIFARE technology into its Universal Integrated Circuit Card> (UICC), which will expand the mobile contactless payment market because MIFARE is arguably the world’s most-deployed technology used for mobile contactless services and Gemalto’s SIMs are in a lot of devices.
