MORRISTOWN, N.J.-AT&T Network Systems Inc. announced its PCS Minicell product portfolio, the flagship product in the company’s new family of wireless base station products for personal communications services systems.
PCS Minicells, according to AT&T, are small, cost-effective base stations designed to operate at 2 GHz and can be easily deployed.
A Code Division Multiple Access technology version of the minicell is scheduled to be commercially available by fourth quarter 1995, AT&T said, using 13 kilobit per second voice encoding technology. A Time Division Multiple Access version of the minicell also is planned.
“We have trials underway of both TDMA and CDMA versions, with more CDMA trials to be announced over the next few months as we complete product development and prepare for commercial deployment,” said Bob Sellinger, AT&T director of PCS. “We believe CDMA is an ideal technology for PCS,” Sellinger said. “It’s the most cost-effective, highest quality, feature-rich technology available for new PCS networks.”
Also included in the product line is a PCS switching center, intelligent network, operating support system options and terminals.
AT&T’s first offering will be the previously announced PCS module, designed to be used with the Autoplex System 1000 Series II Cell Site. The PCS module will be available in mid 1995 in a TDMA version, followed by a CDMA version in the third quarter.
