DALLAS-Omnipoint Corp. announced it has signed a five-year, $100 million agreement with Northern Telecom for a public, digital personal communications services network to serve the New York major trading area.
Northern Telecom will supply the PCS network based on Omnipoint’s PCS2000 spread spectrum radio frequency access technology and Northern Telecom’s distributed PCS networks.
“A key differentiator of this PCS network architecture is its capability to extend public mobility services into both private and public buildings,” said Malcolm Cowan, general manager of public cordless network at Northern Telecom.
The system will provide wireless voice and data services with complete coverage at vehicular mobility speeds and eventually support further network architectures, enabling closer integration of wireless and wireline services.
Omnipoint’s PCS2000 RF technology offers low costs for both capital infrastructure and operations, wireline quality voice and data services and dual-mode operation of pocket phones between licensed PCS networks and unlicensed, customer-owned systems, the company said.
Omnipoint and Northern Telecom also signed a separate agreement to develop and market similar PCS networks to other operators.
Other aspects of Omnipoint’s PCS2000 technology include its advanced features and services and the small, pocket-sized handsets.
