TRI-STATE BUYS EQUIPMENT TO EXPAND PAGING SYSTEM

FORT LEE, N.J.-As part of the company’s plan to offer nationwide service, paging service provider Tri-State Radio Co. said it intends to purchase satellite uplinking equipment and receivers from Skydata Inc., valued at $2 million.

Beginning next month, Tri-State’s service will included redundant uplinking hubs on both coasts. Tri-State will lease space on the Hughes Galaxy 4 satellite using single channel per carrier technology. Subscribers then can choose local, regional and nationwide coverage for their numeric and alphanumeric pagers.

“We have one of the highest reliability ratings in the industry, in terms of customers receiving their pages, because we build out a territory based on specific transmitter placement and coverage overlap,” said Arty Beahm, Tri-State’s vice president of engineering. Tri-State reports 360,000 subscribers throughout the United States.
