CHEBOKSARY, RussiaAT&T Corp. and Global TeleSystems Group Inc. have built a wireless network in Cheboksary, Russia, that connects with the existing local network as well as the international network.
Cheboksary is about 350 miles east of Moscow. The companies will build the same kind of systems for Global TeleSystems’ mobile operations in Voronezh and Lipetsk, about 250 miles east of Moscow. The networks in the three cities will be operating by September, according to AT&T. Global TeleSystems is based in McLean, Va.
Russian customers can use their cellular phones anywhere within the base station’s coverage area, which extends about a 20-mile radius from the city’s center, AT&T said.
