DENVER-An entrepreneur of cellular and personal communications services, J. Shelby Bryan was named chief executive officer of Denver-based IntelCom Group Inc., a teleport and local competitive access provider.
William Becker, formerly CEO, will remain chairman of IntelCom.
Bryan previously was president and CEO of Millicom International Cellular S.A., from 1985 to 1994. During his tenure as CEO, Bryan raised more than $300 million in public debt and equity markets, according to IntelCom, and the company’s market capitalization rose from $25 million to more than $1 billion.
Bryan co-founded MIC, which conducted one of three original trials for cellular communications in the United States. Bryan also worked with the Federal Communications Commission to identify PCS frequencies.
IntelCom has made management changes in its Fiber Optics Technologies subsidiary as well, succeeding a shareholder lawsuit filed in May. The lawsuit alleges IntelCom did not inform shareholders of Securities and Exchange Commission filings that prohibited the Fiber Optics division from bidding on federal government jobs until 1997. Despite being barred, Fiber Optics continued doing business with the government, IntelCom confirmed. The government has taken no legal action against IntelCom to date.
Besides being the nation’s third largest competitive access provider, IntelCom serves a variety of niche wireless markets through its teleport-based satellite services.
