AIRTOUCH BEGINS SERVICE IN MID-ATLANTIC MARKETS

SAN FRANCISCO-AirTouch Paging began service in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., region and turned on service in several mid-Atlantic cities, including Wilmington, Del., York, Pa., and Charlottesville, Norfolk and Richmond, Va.

With the addition of these new locations, Dallas-based AirTouch Paging has operations in more than 130 markets in 21 states, and reports 1.76 million units in service.

“The favorable demographics in our new markets should allow us to continue growing our customer base rapidly,” said Charlie Jackson, president and chief executive officer of AirTouch Paging. “This move is consistent with AirTouch’s overall focus on adding new customers while benefiting from economies of scale and scope,” Jackson said.

The company said it added 358,000 units in 1994, a 31 percent increase from the prior year. The company said its national and regional narrowband PCS licenses will allow it to provide enhanced two-way paging services during 1996.

In other news, Ed Gurry has been appointed regional vice president responsible for the mid-Atlantic and Northeast operations. Ed Katz was named district manager for the Baltimore-Washington area.
