DALLAS-CellStar Corp. has signed an agreement with Usha Martin Telekom Ltd. that will allow a CellStar joint venture company to sell cellular phone service in Calcutta, India. Usha Martin holds a Global System for Mobile communications cellular license for the area.
The joint venture, HCL CellStar Ltd., is equally owned by CellStar and HCL Ltd., an Indian manufacturer of communication and computer products.
As an Usha Martin authorized distributor, HCL CellStar will market both equipment and service to Calcutta subscribers. The contract initially is scheduled to run for three years. HCL CellStar also has announced an agreement with Motorola Inc. to distribute Motorola cellular products throughout India.
“As cellular service is introduced, we are well positioned in major Indian markets to participate in both the distribution of cellular subscriber equipment and accessories and in the sale of service in partnership with the system operators,” said Alan Goldfield, CellStar Corp. chief executive officer.
Demand for wireless products in India is expected to grow as Asia’s subscriber growth rate continues to soar, Goldfield said.
Dallas-based CellStar is a wholesale distributor and retailer of cellular phones and related products in the United States, Latin America, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Africa.
