ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile is using the INReach wireless, in-building communications system developed by Motorola Inc. in its Wallingford, Conn., office.
INReach is an interior wireless solution that connects digitally with private branch exchange or Centrex systems. The system uses a base station with a distributed antenna architecture for uniform coverage, Motorola said. Calls are charged through the regular landline system rather than through a cellular carrier.
Bell Atlantic Nynex will provide INReach for 60 of its employees working in customer service, operations, engineering and human resources. Their cellular phones will be used as an extension or substitute to their desk phone; the handsets can be used throughout a building or campus-like setting. When off-campus, the same cellular phone can be set up to serve the traditional cellular network.
“We have long understood the attractiveness of in-building wireless communications for our customers,” said Richard J. Lynch, executive vice president and chief technology officer for Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile.
An INReach system can serve 2,500 customers and operates on multiple PBX digital interfaces. PBX features such as call transfer and forwarding, call waiting and three-way calling, can be moved to the wireless handset, reducing port capacity for the PBX.
The INReach system complies with the Interim Standard-94 technology for in-building wireless systems and uses a fully, self-contained 10-channel Microcite cell site.
