HP AND VODAFONE RELEASE WIRELESS TEXT MESSAGING ON GSM DIGITAL HANDSETS

PALO ALTO, Calif.-Hewlett-Packard Co.’s OpenMail short messaging service now will be available to users of the Vodafone Group’s Global System for Mobile communications cellular system, the companies announced. The agreement will make it possible for Vodafone subscribers to send and receive text messages on GSM cellular phones.

HP’s OpenMail service operates on a standards-based client/server framework that the company said is flexible, reliable and manageable for building corporate information infrastructure.

Applications, including direct connection of multivendor desktop platforms and e-mail, can be combined into a single set of messaging services that can be accessed by Vodafone’s GSM cellular customers, the companies said. Hence, managers of information systems can simplify messaging architectures and reduce management and administration costs.

Users can chose the desktop environment and applications that meet their needs, added the companies.

“The ability to use the Vodafone network validates OpenMail’s ability to support the mobile work force,” commented Korak Mitra, general manager of Hewlett Packard’s Enterprise Messaging Center.

Vodafone’s digital cellular network covers 95 percent of the population in the United Kingdom, said the company.

Vodafone has roaming agreements with 30 GSM network operators in Europe and more than 10 operators in South Africa, Australia, the Middle East and Asia.
