WESTERN WIRELESS PICKS PCS NETWORK ENGINEER

SUNNYVALE, Calif.-Western Wireless Corp. has selected California Microwave Inc. as a contractor of microwave radio and engineering services for its personal communications services network.

California Microwave will provide network design, transmission engineering and equipment installation. California Microwave also will provide engineering re-design assistance to companies currently operating microwave systems in the auctioned-off spectrum. Incumbent microwave companies must relocate their service under federal rules governing PCS.

Western Wireless won six major trading area licenses in the auction of PCS spectrum earlier this year. The company plans to offer service in Portland, Ore., Des Moines, Iowa, Salt Lake City, El Paso-Albuquerque, N.M., Oklahoma City and Honolulu. The markets, for which Western Wireless paid more than $144 million, have a combined population of about 14 million.

Western Wireless also owns and operates nonwireline cellular phone system in 70 markets, covering a total population of about 6 million.
