CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Shinawatra Paging of Thailand has chosen Glenayre Technologies Inc. to supply infrastructure equipment for the second phase of its system expansion.
Glenayre said it will provide nearly 300 high-performance paging transmitters and a control system using global positioning satellite service. GPS allows simulcasting, when paging signals are sent by multiple transmitters.
Satellite distribution of paging data to a widely dispersed transmitter network allows all of Phonelink’s paging frequencies to be multiplexed into a single satellite link, said Tan Kee Joo, managing director of Shinawatra Paging. Glenayre’s transmitter control system can multiplex up to 31 channels into one link.
Phonelink’s infrastructure improvements will allow the paging company to use high speed paging formats, including Motorola Inc.’s FLEX technology and the ERMES standard.
“Satellite linking in wide-area paging is the preferred medium in North America,” said Russ Allen, executive vice president of worldwide sales for Glenayre. “It provides long-term cost benefits by multiplexing control of paging channels.”
Shinawatra began Phonelink service in 1990. The company’s first expansion phase was completed by Glenayre in July. Total value of both agreements is about $12 million.
Phonelink is a subsidiary of the Shinawatra Computer and Communications Group. Singapore Telecom International has a 40 percent equity stake in Phonelink.
