SALT LAKE CITY-AirGo Communications Inc. unveiled the AirGo phone system, a product that integrates a cellular radio and V.32 modem in a single personal computer card.
AirGo said that by combining a cellular radio and a data/fax modem in a type III PC (or PCMCIA-Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) card, the phone system transforms a portable computer into a cellular and landline phone providing voice, data and fax communications. When the user prefers a portable handset, the PC card, called the PhoneCard, can be moved to the AirGo CardPhone, creating a full-featured cellular phone. The phone works on the analog network.
The product is compatible with Macintosh or IBM-compatible PC card-equipped portable computers, and personal digital assistants. While the PhoneCard is docked in a portable computer, users can place and receive voice calls, and exchange data, fax, or paging messages wirelessly without additional cabling and equipment; a swivel antenna is the only component of the PhoneCard that is visible outside the portable computer. Users can communicate through a landline connection if desired, said AirGo.
AirGo also offers communications software called the PhoneBook that allows users to track contacts and store up to 100 names and numbers.
