MINNEAPOLIS-American Paging Inc. has entered into a comprehensive agreement with Upper Canada Communications Group Inc. of Toronto to coordinate development and use of narrowband personal communications services and conventional paging frequencies in North America.
American Paging said each company will pursue its own PCS buildout plans but will have the added potential to market North American coverage of advanced wireless messaging services.
American Paging and UCCG subsidiary Liazon Communications Solutions Inc. were recently granted conditional authority by their respective governments to construct and operate transmitters in previously restricted cross-border areas, providing an opportunity to develop a North American network using matching frequencies, American Paging said.
“We are pleased by our alliance with UCCG and by the subsequent actions of the (Federal Communications Commission) and Industry Canada. Potentially, this coordinated network could transmit anywhere throughout North America, allowing customers to stay in touch,” said John Schaff, president and chief executive officer of American Paging.
Headquartered in Minneapolis, American Paging is 82.4 percent owned by Telephone and Data Systems Inc. The company is presently being restructured to consolidate 17 operating centers into two regional locations.
