L.M. Ericsson and Telia Mobitel have signed a two-year general purchasing agreement covering delivery and installation of Global System for Mobile communications systems to expand the capacity and radio coverage of Telia Mobitel’s digital mobile network in Sweden, Ericsson announced. The agreement includes deliveries of GSM equipment consisting of a new generation of dual-band base stations with smaller dimensions and minimized operation and maintenance needs, as well as switching equipment, said Ericsson. The agreement is valued at $150 million.

Omnitel Pronto Italia, Italy’s first private Global System for Mobile communications operator, announced it has added more than 50,000 subscribers since launching its service on Dec. 7. Omnitel said the figure represents more than 40 percent of the Italian GSM market. Omnitel competes with Telecom Italia Mobile SpA, a government-controlled GSM provider.

Objective Systems Integrators announced it has signed an agreement with Data Sciences of the Netherlands to market OSI’s NetExpert operational support system and network management application throughout the Netherlands, Benelux, the United Kingdom and Germany. OSI said NetExpert is a standards-based software framework that provides an open suite of network operations support and management applications that Data Sciences will use to integrate solutions for its clients. Data Sciences already has successfully used NetExpert in Nordic Mobile Telephone and Global System for Mobile communications wireless management systems that were designed by Data Sciences and integrated for the Dutch PTT Telecom Telecommunications service provider, said OSI. OSI also announced it will open its European sales and support office in the Netherlands.

MobileOne, which will provide Singapore’s second mobile phone and public radio paging service, has awarded a $35 million turnkey supply contract to Nokia Telecommunications, MobileOne announced. MobileOne said Nokia will supply and install an extensive network of base stations throughout Singapore. The network is scheduled to be launched in April 1997.

Technology Futures Inc. announced it formed a new company called Technology Futures Brasil. The firm will assist technology-intensive companies in the United States, Brazil and other countries capitalizing on opportunities presented by the expanding and changing economy of Brazil and its trade partners, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, said Technology Futures.

The government of Indonesia announced it will license the state-owned telecom manufacturer as the first personal communications services operator in that nation. PT Industri Telekomunikasi Indonesia won the award due to the significant growth of its business in the last few years, according to the ministry of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications. PT INTI designs the Intacts cordless telecommunications systems which was developed jointly with Japan Radio Communications and PT Telkom, a state-owned company providing domestic telecom service. Indonesia has two analog systems; three operators have Global System for Mobile communications networks. Indonesia is expected to offer additional PCS licenses at a later date.
