COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-Texas Instruments Inc. said it has signed a memorandum of understanding to manufacture equipment based on Omnipoint Corp.’s IS-661 technology. TI will manufacture certain components of the IS-661 base station including radios, digital controller boards and interface cards.
Under the agreement, TI will provide complete turnkey purchasing, manufacturing, testing and delivery of core electronics for Omnipoint’s IS-661 base station radio frequency access technology. TI will manufacture Omnipoint’s technology at its Austin, Texas, facility, Omnipoint said.
Omnipoint has already announced licensing and development relationships with Northern Telecom Inc., Ericsson Radio Systems and JRC International Inc.
The company was awarded a pioneer’s preference by the Federal Communications Commission in December 1993, which resulted in the grant of the A-band PCS operating license in the New York City major trading area in December 1994. Omnipoint has said it plans to begin operating a trial PCS system in Manhattan sometime this year.
“TI is delighted to be working with Omnipoint on their ground-breaking technology and to be involved in the fast-growing PCS market,” said Timothy Flint, new business development manager at Texas Instruments.
