Safco Corp.’s Electronic Systems Division has opened a third satellite office in Boca Raton, Fla., to serve the Latin American market. David Neumann will lead the new office. Neumann joined Safco in 1991, and previously served as a systems engineer and a national accounts manager. Safco also has a European operations office in Oxford, England, and an Asian operations office in Hong Kong.
Motorola Inc.’s International Cellular Infrastructure Division announced it has been awarded a $14 million contract to expand cellular phone service in Thailand. Total Access Communications Public Co. Ltd. has ordered the expansion in an effort to provide nationwide coverage on its rapidly growing digital cellular phone network, Motorola said. Motorola will deploy Digital Communication System 1800 base station equipment in Thailand’s northeast, central and eastern seaboard regions. The system will support up to 80,000 subscribers, Motorola said.
Coherent Communications Systems Corp. announced it has delivered an additional 6,000 channels of digital echo cancellation to Austria Telecom. Austria Telecom is one of two suppliers authorized by the Austrian PTT to operate Global System for Mobile communications networks, Coherent said.
LCC L.L.C. said it plans to open an office in Brazil to serve as the company’s initial base of operation for sales and service to customers throughout South America. During its first year of operation, the new office will serve as South American headquarters for LCC’s sales, hardware support, engineering and program management staff. LCC provides an integrated offering of hardware, software and engineering services to the South American market.
L.M. Ericsson announced it has signed a Global System for Mobile communications network expansion contract with Liaoning Post and Telecommunications Administration. Ericsson said the contract, valued at $125 million, is the largest it has signed in northern China. The capacity of the GSM network will reach 800,000 subscribers after the expansion, Ericsson said. Long term cooperation between the Liaoning Province and Ericsson began more than 10 years ago. During this period, the Administration introduced Ericsson technology in the fixed network as well as in both the analog and the digital mobile networks, Ericsson said.
DSC Communications Corp. announced the turn-up of its MegaHub Signal Transfer Point products into full service in Deutsche Telekom AG’s telecommunications network. Deutsche Telekom, the principal telecommunications carrier in Germany, recently completed in-service stability and reliability testing of DSC’s systems. DSC said it supplied the stand-alone STP systems under a 1994 agreement with Deutsche Telekom.
