Nexus Telecommunication Systems Ltd. announced it has granted a license to operate its wireless messaging system over 2 MHz in the 900 UHF to Eden, a fully owned subsidiary of Nexus set up to operate the messaging system and provide its services in Israel. Nexus said its patented technology will allow it to deliver digital messages from a variety of end-user devices such as two-way pagers and industrial monitoring modems installed in vending machines. The system also provides vehicle location capabilities and uses advanced frequency hopping, spread spectrum technology.

Polkomtel S.A. and Nokia Telecommunications OY have signed a letter of intent calling for Nokia to provide infrastructure equipment for a Global System for Mobile communications mobile telephony network in Poland. The companies are expected to sign a final contract May 20.

L.M. Ericsson announced it has been awarded a contract for a digital Advanced Mobile Phone Service expansion order by Vempelcom for Moscow and the surrounding region. The expansion order consists of upgrades of the existing network to enhance capacity and ensure the maintenance of a high quality system in central Moscow and its suburbs, Ericsson said.

InterDigital Communications Corp. announced it has received the first of $2 million payments from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. under an alliance agreement executed by the two companies in February. Samsung’s first payment follows the receipt of certain Korean government approvals associated with the transaction. Among the approvals, Samsung had to prove to the Korean Ministry of Information and Communications that its broadband Code Division Multiple Access technology would have a significant economic or technological effect on the Korean national economy. The company also was required to show that B-CDMA was substantially more advanced than prior technology introduced in Korea. The alliance between the two companies calls for InterDigital’s current products and patents to be licensed to Samsung, including InterDigital’s proprietary B-CDMA air interface technology.

Angell Communications Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Triden Telecom Inc., announced it has acquired 49 percent ownership in Mexico-based Radiodigital 220. The two companies plan to provide nationwide 220 MHz sales, service and operations throughout Mexico. Radiodigital has established a manufacturing plant in Mexico for the assembly of Securicor’s Linear Modulation technology repeaters and mobile radios, said Angell. Construction of the systems is expected to begin by the end of the year, making the two companies the first provider of 220 MHz services in Mexico, said Angell.
