Lucent Technologies Inc. announced it has been awarded a $107 million contract by Escotel to build and maintain a Global System for Mobile communications network covering India’s Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala regions. The new wireless network will be fully interconnected to existing wireline networks, Lucent said.

Telecel International Ltd., the first company to introduce cellular technology to the African continent, announced it will keep its offices and system active in Bangui, Africa, despite escalating civil unrest and violence in the nation. Telecel’s offices in Bangui already have been approached by rebel fighters but the offices have not been destroyed, the company said. Telecel said it will keep its system operating for as long as possible.

AVIC Group International Inc. and Sichuan United Electronic Technology Development Corp., an operating authority of China’s Government of Sichuan Province, announced they have agreed to jointly develop a series of major telecommunications projects, including wireless mobile, paging and satellite networks and wireline networks across Sichuan Province. The agreement calls for AVIC to secure project financing, obtain technologies and coordinate the construction of the networks. Sichuan United will acquire the necessary government approvals and licenses, provide the required frequency sources and interconnect agreements and actively promote telecommunications development within the province, the companies said.

Radiofon de Colombia Inc., a subsidiary of International Telemessaging Services Inc., has raised equity capital through the sale of preferred and common stock, Daniels & Associates announced. International Telemessaging provides paging services in Latin America.

Goldtron Ltd. has introduced its four-line alphanumeric pager with Chinese character display called Legend 2000 to complement the launch of the Chinese Character Paging Service in Singapore. The pager has a multilingual capability that allows it to support different languages such as English, Chinese, Russian, Bahasa Malaysia, Thai and Cambodian. Goldtron said the Legend 2000 is capable of simultaneously supporting multiple languages in one sentence. For example, a sentence can comprise both English and Chinese characters.

AccessLine Technologies Inc. said its One Person, One Number service is now commercially available to customers in Tokyo. AccessLine said the service is being marketed under the name One Number Service through a joint venture established by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., NTT DoCoMo and AccessLine. AccessLine also announced that Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co. and International Digital Communications Inc. have joined the One Number Service joint venture, bringing the total number of partners to 21.
