GREENVILLE, S.C.-PCS Development Corp. said it will spend a total of $125 million in separate contracts with Motorola Inc. and Glenayre Technologies Inc. to purchase infrastructure equipment and subscriber units for its nationwide narrowband personal communications services network that is expected to become operational in early 1997.
“In reaching these agreements, PCSD has moved to the next level, from ordering equipment for trials in two individual cities in January to beginning our network deployment in cities throughout the United States,” said company President Bill deKay.
PCSD’s contract with Motorola, valued at nearly $50 million, covers supplying infrastructure equipment and delivering Tenor mobile voice messaging units-pocket answering machines that will be the first devices to operate with PCSD’s 50 kHz/50 kHz inbound/outbound narrowband network, said PCSD.
The Glenayre contract covers $75 million of infrastructure equipment.
“We’re on track for completing our trials in Atlanta, using Motorola equipment, and in Boston, using Glenayre equipment, in the third quarter of this year,” said Jerry Leonard, senior vice president of engineering and network operations for PCSD. “These trials will enable us to modify and fine-tune the equipment and lay the groundwork for nationwide implementation.”
PCSD said its nationwide network will be based on Motorola’s InFLEXion technology.
