E.F. Johnson Co. has signed a $3.6 million contract to build a trunked radio system for Campanhia Energetica de Minas Gerias (CEMIG), an electrical power generation and distribution company in Brazil. The 900 MHz Multi-Net trunking system will cover the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, capital of Brazil’s second largest state, Minas Gerais. The seven-site, 30-channel system will support more than 800 mobile and portable radios that CEMIG will use for distribution, maintenance and security, said E.F. Johnson. The system is scheduled to be constructed by second quarter 1997.
Lazard Brothers and Salomon Brothers, on the behalf of Reltec Holdings, have made a cash offer of about $124 million, or $5.19 per share, to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Rainford Group Plc, based in Rainford, Britain. Rainford is a European manufacturer of base station cabinet enclosures for the telecommunications equipment industry and a supplier of electromagnetic protection equipment and systems. Reltec is an affiliate of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., which it acquired from Rockwell International Corp. last year.
Compania de Telecomunicaciones de Chile S.A., Telefonica Internacional S.A. and Rede Brasil Sul have created a new consortium that will participate in the public auction of 35 percent of the Compania Riograndense de Telecomunicacoes. CRT currently provides local telephone service, cellular service, data transmission and long-distance telephone services within the Rio Grande state in Brazil. The preliminary qualification of bidders will take place in the upcoming months and it is expected that the public auction will occur before the end of the year.
California Microwave Inc.’s Satellite Transmission Systems division has won a contract to design, manufacture and install a domestic satellite communications network for Empresa Estatal de Telecomunicaciones, Ecuador’s state-owned telephone company. The $4.9 million contract calls for the installation of an Intelsat Standard A hub earth station to be located in Guayaquil, with a network of five remote sites to serve rural towns throughout Ecuador. California Microwave also will provide training for the operation and long-term maintenance of the system.
Millicom International Cellular S.A. has entered an agreement with Celcore Inc. to deploy a cellular system in Russia later this year. Millicom expects to be the first company to offer cellular service in Smolensk, a city of 1.2 million people located 400 kilometers west of Moscow. Millicom’s cellular system includes the Celcore GlobalSwitch mobile switching center, GlobalCell AMPS base stations and a network management system. Celcore said it also is providing Millicom a complete system solution including installation services and ancillary equipment.
