ARLINGTON, Va.-Omnipoint Corp. announced a loss of $21.5 million, or 47 cents per share, for the second quarter ended June 30. This compares with a loss of $16.4 million, or 52 cents per share, for the same quarter last year.
The company reported a loss of $37.4 million, or 87 cents per share, for the six month period compared with a loss of $31.2 million, or 99 cents per share, for the same period last year.
Prior year results were not adjusted for changes in the number of common shares outstanding.
Omnipoint is building a personal communications services network in New York and investing in research and development for its proprietary Interim Standard 661 wireless technology. It also acquired several PCS licenses at auction.
Nextel revenues up 208 percent
WASHINGTON-Nextel Communications Inc. reported $67.7 million in revenue for the second quarter ending June 30, reflecting a 208 percent increase when compared with $21.9 million for the same period last year.
However, the company reported a net loss of $130 million, or 58 cents per share, for the three months ending June 30. Nextel reported a $56.9 million loss for the same period last year.
The cost of radio service revenue increased from $16.6 million in 1995 to nearly $50 million in 1996, Nextel said.
The company reported the number of digital units in service is up 36 percent. The total number of specialized mobile radio units in service is 985,000, of which 176,000 are digital; 129,000 digital units were reported in service the first quarter of this year.
“So far this year, our average monthly revenue per digital unit has increased 46 percent to more than $54 during June, and our monthly churn rate for digital service remains less than 1 percent,” said Steven Shindler, Nextel’s chief financial officer.
Geotek posts loss in second quarter
MONTVALE, N.J.-Geotek Communications Inc. said its net loss for the second quarter ended June 30 was $31.3 million, or 57 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $12.4 million, or 26 cents per share, for the second quarter 1995. Net loss for the first six months of the year was $57.7 million, or $1.06 per share. Loss for the first six months of 1995 was $26.1 million, or 54 cents per share.
