Motorola Inc.’s Advanced Messaging Group said Shanghai Guomai, the largest paging carrier in China, is operating using Motorola’s FLEX protocol-based paging system in Shanghai. Guomai has close to 1 million subscribers in service in the city and outskirts of Shanghai. The new FLEX protocol-based paging service is targeted at paging subscribers using Chinese Character Display pagers for access to information and value-added services, said Motorola.

Telecel International Ltd. has selected Priority Call Management’s Oryx platform to deliver new telephone services in Zaire, Africa. Telecel is using Priority’s Oryx platform to link cellular and satellite networks with local land-based telephone systems, said Priority Call Management. Oryx is an intelligent telecommunications platform that also provides enhanced telephone services, including one number, prepaid and international calling, as well as voice dialing and voice/fax messaging, the company said.

Globus Cellular and User Protection Inc. of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, announced it received an allowance for its patent application from the European examiner for the International Patent Cooperation Treaty regarding its shielding technology for cellular phone antennas. Globus said the technology protects cellular phone users from microwave radiation emitted from cellular phones. The Patent Cooperation Treaty has been signed by more than 60 countries. The company said it intends to market its antenna technology.

About 55 telecommunications companies and authorities in Japan, Singapore and Australia and elsewhere formed the PHS MoU group to support and grow the Personal Handyphone System market. The majority of the inaugural members are Japanese companies, including DDI Corp. and an affiliate; Fujitsu Ltd.; Hitachi Ltd.; Japan Radio Co. Ltd.; Kyocera Corp.; Matsushita Communication Industrial Co. Ltd.; Mitsubishi Electric Corp.; Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. and some affiliates; Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd.; Sharp Corp.; Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. American companies include Advanced Mobile Systems Inc.; ArrayComm Inc.; Cirrus Logic K.K. (the parent company of Pacific Communications Sciences Inc.); Lucent Technologies Japan Ltd. and others.

Alenia Spazio S.p.A. and Sky Station International Inc. signed an agreement to produce 250 stratospheric telecommunications payloads during the next seven years. The payloads will operate in the millimeter frequency range and will serve as the backbone for a globally available broadband wireless telecommunications system, said the companies. The principal applications of the new technology are expected to be wireless broadband Internet service.
