BOYNTON BEACH, Fla.-Motorola Inc. announced the winners of its second annual pager design competition for college student designers. The enormous growth in pager use by children and teenagers prompted Motorola to focus the contest challenge on designing pagers for the younger generation, said the company.
Students were asked to develop pagers with styles and functions most wanted by either children or teens, said Motorola. The winning designs were judged on five criteria: imagination, user-friendliness, originality, flexibility and future vision.
The first-prize winning design was a cartoon-like pager in kangaroo-type pouch. Second prize was a soft, round pager with easy messaging access and third prize went to a pager with interchangeable protective casings.
The competition was sponsored by the North American Paging Subscriber Division of Motorola and was open to all college and university students enrolled in industrial design programs throughout the United States.
The first place winner, Chih-Hong Hsieh, received an internship at Motorola’s design facility in Boynton Beach, Fla., $5,000 in cash and a Motorola pager.
