OMNIPOINT CHOOSES ORGA FOR SIM CARDS

MOUNTAIN LAKES, N.J.-Personal communications services operator Omnipoint Communications Inc. has chosen Paoli, Penn.-based Orga Card Systems to supply subscriber identity modules, or smart cards.

Under the terms of the agreement between the two companies, Orga will supply OCI, a wholly owned subsidiary of Omnipoint Corp., with a minimum of 1 million smart cards during the three-year length of the contract. Both parties also have agreed to support each other’s marketing activities, and Orga will provide OCI technical development resources for the integration of the smart cards into OCI’s Global System for Mobile communications-based network.

Orga will provide its advanced OTA Phase II SIM card, which is designed for the new, low-power PCS handsets, said OCI. The smart card is one of the security devices on the GSM network, making it nearly impossible to steal numbers or make fraudulent phone calls, said OCI. The cards store a subscriber’s personal information such as a phone number and personal security key. Other information that can be stored on the card includes missed calls, voice mail notifications and text messages.

OCI expects to launch initial commercial service in metropolitan New York during the fourth quarter.

Omnipoint received a pioneer’s preference license in the New York major trading area and won 18 basic trading area licenses in the C-block auction that ended in May.
