Motorola to deploy E911 identification

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola’s Cellular Infrastructure Group plans to begin implementing an emergency call location identification system named “Wireless E911,” during the second quarter of 1997.

The Cellular Telephone Industry Association estimates cellular users make 18 million emergency calls per year, or 50,000 each day. Wireless E911 will ensure that emergency calls are routed to the nearest public safety answering point and that the emergency dispatcher has the caller’s cellular phone number in order to call the caller back.

The system will speed up response to emergencies by automatically pinpointing the location of mobile callers, especially when they are unable to identify their location, said Marty Singer, general manager of CIG’s Wireless Access and Business Development Division.
