ATLANTA-LHS Communications Systems Inc. announced it has licensed its Business Support and Control System to Powertel Inc. of West Point, Ga.
The agreement follows recent licensing agreements with American Portable Telecom Inc. for personal communication services in major trading areas covering 27.3 million people, and an earlier agreement with Pacific Bell Mobile Services.
BSCS was designed to support the complexity of the Global System for Mobile communications standard. Its modular design interfaces with various network elements and external systems, performs integrated billing and customer care functions, makes changes in real time for on-demand billing and generates bills in almost any language, said LHS.
Powertel, a wholly owned subsidiary of InterCel Inc., owns licenses to provide PCS to more than 16 million pops in 10 Southeastern states. The company plans to market its PCS services using the GSM technology in the Jacksonville, Memphis, Tenn./Jackson, Miss., and Birmingham, Ala., MTAs beginning in the fourth quarter, and the Atlanta MTA beginning in late 1997.
“We felt that LHS offered us the best long-term solution,” said Tim Moss, Powertel’s vice president of information technology. “The company knows GSM … and we felt GSM was the best answer for the services and features we want to provide.”
