WASHINGTON-Swiss Telecom North America announced it has invested $285 million to secure a 30 percent stake in the Malaysian carrier Mutiara Telecommunications, a digital cellular provider with more than 55,000 subscribers. The investment follows a decision by the Malaysian government to allow full operation of Mutiara’s international gateway and other services.
“It is Swiss Telecom’s intent to use Mutiara’s facilities to develop a regional hub for its Asian international traffic,” said Konnie Schaefer, STNA’s managing director. “In addition to investments in the carrier, Swiss Telecom will contribute management input to the company as well as extensive training, exchange programs and short-term project support.”
