MOUNTAIN LAKES, N.J.-Omnipoint Communications Inc., a personal communications services operator, will expand its “friendly user” network trial by several hundred people in the New York City metropolitan area.
The users will test such things as proper network coverage and voice quality, service features including two-way short messaging services, numeric paging, voice mail and Caller ID. In addition, users will rate collateral items such as consumer brochures, handset user guides and videos, billing and customer care functions.
Omnipoint began testing its network in August with an employee trial. In October, the company began its “friendly user” testing with around 50 outside people.
“Our friendly user trial marks the countdown to commercial launch,” said George Schmitt, president of Omnipoint. “As I have noted, once we began the friendly user trials, we would be four to six weeks from offering our wireless services to our consumers.”
FIRST CALL TO OFFE STOCK MARKET NEWS
NEW YORK-First Call data including First Call Notes headlines, consensus estimates and select alerts, will be available through UBIQ Communications Inc.’s UBIQFLASH service early next year. The service uses two-way narrowband personal communications services technology to keep subscribers updated on stock market news.
Using Motorola Inc.’s PageWriter, UBIQFLASH subscribers can access First Call data as well as other market alerts including Standard & Poor’s MarketScope. They then can use the same messaging unit to initiate remote transactions or request additional information.
“The premium quality of First Call’s data mixed with the portability of two-way text messaging will make the UBIQFLASH a sure-fire hit,” said Walt Arvin, UBIQ president and chief executive officer.
