SAN DIEGO-Pacific Communication Sciences Inc. will provide its Personal Access Link smart phone to TranSettlements Network Services for use in its Tracker Transportation Information System. TranSettlements provides value-added electronic data interchange services to the transportation industry.
The cellular phone has an embedded wireless modem that enables users to communicate via voice or data, the company said. It will enable drivers to make and receive phone calls, access the Internet or company intranet, and keep in touch with dispatchers from the vehicle or from a customer’s loading dock or office. The phone will be used to deliver pickup and delivery information as well as customer data, the company said.
The phone uses Cellular Digital Packet Data technology, which sends encrypted data over existing Advanced Mobile Phone Service networks. In areas where CDPD is not yet available, coverage is provided by circuit-switched CDPD.
The Tracker system is undergoing pilot testing in Portland, Ore., and Hayward, Calif.
PCSI also announced its PAL phone has been nominated as a finalist in the Connect 1996 Most Innovative New Products Awards competition in the high technology category.
