MINNEAPOLIS-ADC Telecommunications Inc. will acquire the infrastructure equipment group of Pacific Communication Sciences Inc., according to a definitive agreement. ADC said it will purchase the group in a cash deal valued at $23 million.
“To realize our goal of expanding ADC’s presence in mobile and wireless local loop applications, we needed a company that matched our business strategy and could boast a track record of successful system design execution,” said Jack Reily, vice president of business development for ADC. “The infrastructure equipment group of PCSI met all our criteria. Its RF system design expertise is the ideal complement to ADC’s established platforms.”
ADC said a key part of its wireless strategy is to actively participate in the growth of the primary digital air interfaces for cellular and personal communications, including Global System for Mobile communications, Code Division Multiple Access, Digital Advanced Mobile Phone Service, and Personal HandyPhone System. The acquisition would support this strategy by giving ADC core competencies in PHS base station design.
PHS digital cordless technology proved very successful in Japan. ADC expects it to be a leading candidate for the wireless local loop markets in Asia and Latin America.
In addition, the company said it will benefit from the PCSI infrastructure equipment group’s wireless data and advanced one-way and two-way paging expertise.
