MONTVALE, N.J.-Geotek Communications Inc. and RWE Telliance AG formed a partnership to merge their RegioNet and RWE Terrafon Bundelfunk analog networks in Germany.
The companies each will hold a 50 percent equity position in the operation, which will provide integrated mobile voice and data communication services for fleet-based businesses.
Geotek and RWE also announced plans for a new digital wireless network based on Geotek’s Frequency Hopping Multiple Access technology. Initial deployment of the system is scheduled to begin late next year, said Geotek.
“We are extremely pleased to unite with RWE, an emerging major force in the telecommunications marketplace in Germany,” said Yaron Eiten, chairman and chief executive officer of Geotek. “Our combined resources and digital capabilities will offer increased efficiency for mobile workers and enhanced information management capabilities for fleet dispatchers.”
Peter Schwarzmann, executive member of the board for RWE, added, “By joining our (Public Access Mobile Radio) networks and installing a new digital infrastructure, we will have the opportunity in the future to offer the complete palette of integrated voice and data service in Germany.”
In addition, Geotek announced it will supply its FHMA base stations to Rohde & Schwarz, a German manufacturer of trunked mobile radio equipment. Rohde & Schwarz plans to adapt its advanced digital trunking switch to support the FHMA network.
