A network test equipment company that has supplied equipment for landline and cellular operators is launching a product line specifically for the wireless industry.
Telecommunications Techniques Corp. will begin offering on Jan. 6 the T-Berd 2207, a modular, battery-powered handheld test instrument for PCS 1900 networks.
The device lets users perform physical layer testing, dual-receiver in-service monitoring of T-1 circuit connections, as well as 64 kilobit per second channels within a T-1 line, TTC said.
“The advent of digital has presented an opportunity for TTC,” said Mark Cortner, marketing product line manager. “Our experience and expertise is digital.”
TTC currently builds equipment that tests T-1 lines, DS1 and DS0 for central office applications, wideband, broadband and narrowband systems, wide area networks, local area networks, encapsulated LANs and more.
The company said its new line of test equipment, the 2000 series, was designed from the ground up to meet the needs of wireless operators.
“This product was conceptualized for wireless. There was no repositioning of the same product,” Cortner said.
The 2207 pulls apart, separating the application module from the user interface module in case there is an independent application the user wants to run. Users can buy one platform and change applications, Cortner said.
Other application modules just slide into the unit, and TTC even will create modules for a user’s special application.
Also, the 2207 can access sub-channels of PCS 1900 networks, which are based on Global System for Mobile communications technology, in order to monitor GSM voice signals between base stations and switching centers.
“This capability is ideal for verifying proper operation and voice quality without disrupting revenue-earning traffic,” TTC said.
The screen operates with either a wand or by finger touch. The unit is priced at about $6,000.
