METRO ONE DISCONTINUES GTE’S DIRECTORY SERVICE

PORTLAND, Ore.-Metro One Telecommunications Inc. is discontinuing its enhanced directory assistance service to GTE Mobilnet Inc. subscribers in San Diego.

The phase-out will be completed in January.

Metro One originally initiated the service in San Diego under a contract with U S West NewVector Group Inc. in 1992. In 1995, GTE and U S West traded their Portland and San Diego license areas.

The company said directory assistance for GTE Mobilnet is expected to be provided remotely by GTE Corp. operators.

The San Diego call center will begin serving Sprint PCS customers when service is initiated in California and Nevada.

“The San Diego call center remains an important part of our plan to provide local and nationwide (enhanced directory assistance) from our nationwide network of call centers,” said Timothy A. Timmins, Metro One’s president and chief executive officer.

“(The Sprint PCS) agreement is expected to generate (enhanced directory assistance) calls from, among other areas, California and Nevada, and this potential call volume is expected to be serviced initially from our San Diego call center.”
