STOCKHOLM, Sweden-More than 3.5 million people sign up for digital wireless services each month, according to a study conducted by L.M. Ericsson. The company estimated 126 million people were wireless subscribers at the end of the third quarter 1996.
Around 16 million people signed up for wireless between July and September, more than half of which were digital subscribers, Ericsson said. Based on that figure, the company predicts 140 million wireless subscribers worldwide by year-end.
The report, “Wireless Systems Reference List,” lists number of subscribers in all countries, percentage of wireless penetration to population in each country and Ericsson’s position as wireless infrastructure supplier for 85 countries.
The company also reported the majority of worldwide digital subscribers use Time Division Multiple Access technology, while Global System for Mobile communications accounts for 58 percent of all digital wireless systems.
