Omnipoint Communications Inc. has been granted access to the New York Power Authority’s structures and rights-of-way. Under the agreement, approved by the board of trustees of the New York Power Authority, Omnipoint will have access to the structures and rights-of-way to install equipment and build its personal communications services network.

M/A-COM Inc., a wireless components and sub-system solutions provider, contracted with catalog distributor Newark Electronics to be included in a catalog that includes microwave, cellular and radio frequency components. In return, M/A-COM will provide Newark Electronics with RF integrated circuits, passive and control devices, antennas, cables and interconnects for Newark’s distribution centers. Newark said M/A-COM now will have increased access to regional segments of the design engineering community.

Corsair Communications Inc. said its PhonePrint RF fingerprinting technology reduced cellular fraud by 75 percent in Cellular One’s Chicago market during its first five months in service. PhonePrint detects fraudulent calls and automatically disconnects them. PhonePrint has been deployed in several markets across the United States, providing fraud protection for customers away from their home area.

Motorola Inc. will provide its InFLEXion voice messaging protocol and its ReFLEX two-way paging protocol to Bell Mobility for voice messaging trials in Ottawa, Canada, early next year. The test will span several months and will use Motorola’s Tenor messaging units. Bell Mobility said it expects voice paging to bring many new users into the wireless market for the first time, in addition to providing the service to traditional paging users.

Mississippi cellular provider Cellular South said it will begin offering prepaid wireless services in its 42 counties. SmartPay, a product of National Telemanagement Corp., allows customers to prepay for airtime using cash, bank drafts or credit cards. Subscribers can make and receive calls with the SmartPay service. Cellular South said SmartPay is great for those who don’t want to go through the credit check process, for anyone who wants to impose limits on their cellular service, or for those who just want to pay in advance.

Metrocall Inc. and Desktop Paging Software Inc. formed an alliance that will allow Metrocall subscribers access to NoteSender text messaging software. NoteSender software allows Windows and Macintosh operating systems to send text messages to alphanumeric pagers. Features of the software include an unlimited subscriber directory, group paging, preset messages and message logging.

SBA Inc. announced it has opened regional offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Denver. SBA offers wireless carriers services including project management, site acquisition, zoning, construction management, site management and maintenance services.
