BANGKOK, Thailand-Lucent Technologies Inc. announced it has signed a multimillion dollar contract with Thailand’s Total Access Communication Company Ltd. to supply and install the country’s first commercial Code Division Multiple Access wireless network.
Lucent said it was chosen by the Communications Authority of Thailand for the project in August. The network will cover Bangkok and the central region of Thailand, said Lucent.
According to the agreement, Lucent will supply its flagship switching system the 5ESS-2000 switch and Autoplex System 1000 platform. The network, which will be capable of supporting 150,000 subscribers, will have two mobile switching centers and 69 cell sites.
“Lucent Technologies’ success in winning this contract is proof that our CDMA technology is not only a highly efficient and effective cellular system, but one that is also commercially viable and suitable for the telecommunications needs of the countries in Asia-Pacific,” said Don Green, president of Network Wireless Systems for the Asia-Pacific region.
In October, Lucent won a $71 million contract in South Korea from Shinsegi Telecomm Inc. to supply and install a CDMA network in Pusan and Kyungnam.
The Asia-Pacific region is becoming a stronghold for CDMA. The CDMA Development Group recently created an Asia-Pacific Working Group within the organization to address CDMA development issues in that region.
Four wireless operators from Korea and Japan have joined the group, said the CDG.
