ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc.’s Asia Pacific Cellular Infrastructure Group won a contract to expand Total Access Communications Public Co. Ltd.’s narrowband Advanced Mobile Phone Service network in Thailand.
The contract, which Motorola values at $120 million, includes expanding overall network capacity and extending geographic coverage in Bangkok and Thailand’s provinces. Motorola said it will upgrade the network to a digital-ready NAMPS platform using its linear power amplifiers and will deploy its SC 9600 base station equipment, which supports AMPS, NAMPS and Code Division Multiple Access technologies in the same base station.
Motorola originally installed the AMPS system in 1995. Richard Sell, corporate vice president of Motorola’s APCIG, said, “This latest expansion of its Motorola NAMPS-based network will enable (Total Access Communications) to continue to meet its aggressive operating goal of attracting new subscribers in Thailand’s urban, suburban and rural markets.”
Funding for the project is provided by an Export-Import Bank of the United States long-term direct loan. Motorola said it is the first loan of its kind to a cellular operator in Asia.
Total Access Communications is a subsidiary of United Communications Industry Public Co. Ltd. of Thailand.
