Qualcomm Personal Electronics reported it has shipped more than 1 million Code Division Multiple Access portable phones. Qualcomm Personal Electronics, a joint venture of Qualcomm Inc. and Sony Electronics Inc., manufactures the Qualcomm QCP-800 cellular and QCP-1900 PCS phones, and the Sony CM-D500 cellular and CM-D600 PCS phones for worldwide distribution.

Siemens Public Communication Network Group placed an order with InterVoice Inc. for its Network Services Platform-5000. InterVoice said the initial order is valued at $4.6 million. The systems will be delivered this month. Siemens will distribute the NSP-5000 as part of its Intelligent Network product line. The NSP-5000 is designed for use in wireline and wireless telephone networks to deliver network-based call automation services including automated operator services, interactive voice response, personal number services and voice and fax mail.

Mobile Data Solutions Inc. signed a contract with Convergent Group Corp. to install MDSI’s utility mobile work force management system at IES Industries of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The project, managed by Convergent Group, will include applications to manage mobile work forces including work and outage management and computer-aided dispatch. MDSI said the system will automate up to 250 mobile field service representatives.

Mitsubishi Wireless Communications Inc. signed a three-year agreement to provide personal communications services handsets using Global System for Mobile communications technology for Powertel Inc.’s networks in the Southeastern United States. Mitsubishi will begin shipping its G100 PCS phones to Powertel during the third quarter. The phones will be sold as an off-the-shelf retail product co-branded by Mitsubishi and Powertel. The G100 PCS handset is a five-ounce, flip style phone with a six-line, 12-character dot matrix display with four rows for text and two rows for icons.

WinStar Communications Inc. agreed to sell $100 million of convertible preferred stock and warrants in a private placement to a group of institutional investors. The stock will be sold at a face value of $25 per share. Credit Suisse First Boston Corp. was placement agent for the offering. The 4 million shares of cumulative convertible preferred stock earn a 6 percent annual dividend and mature in five years.

Affordable Message Center announced it will market PageMart Wireless Inc.’s nationwide alphanumeric InfoRoam service to all of AMC’s reseller agents in the United States. InfoRoam is a nationwide alphanumeric service, in which users specify their new destination before traveling. If a New Yorker travels to Denver, for example, he or she would dial an 800-number to enter the area code for Denver. By narrowing the broadcast region, PageMart can offer nationwide alphanumeric service at very competitive rates. AMC will sell InfoRoam to its reseller clients for $20 and $25 per month.
