Chesapeake Wireless Technologies Inc. relocated its headquarters to a new facility in Baltimore in order to accommodate the expansion of its service division, which provides basic cable assemblies used in cell site and mobile telephone switching office applications.The company said it expects the new facility to meet its needs for at least six to 12 months.
Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile said it will provide cellular data services to Aether Technologies International L.L.C., which will offer real-time stock quotes and national headline news using a small cellular voice and data terminal.
The AirBroker Personal Investment Communicator offered by Aether is aimed at professional brokers and serious investors. Aether will use Bell Atlantic Mobile’s AirBridge Cellular Digital Packet Data service to offer quotes from the New York and American stock exchanges, NASDAQ and headline news.
Harris Corp. won contracts to relocate incumbent public service agencies to make way for the new personal communications services networks. Harris values the contracts at $17 million. The company will relocate Texas-based Valero Natural Gas Co., the city of Dallas public safety communications network and the Rhode Island police communications network from the 2 GHz band. All three projects are scheduled to be completed within a year.
Burlington Motor Carriers will install 2,000 mobile communications systems in its fleet, through an agreement with HighwayMaster Corp. In return, HighwayMaster will purchase Burlington’s proprietary fleet operating software. Burlington is one of North America’s largest truckload carriers and logistics providers, with service to 48 states, Canada and Mexico.
ScrippsHealth, a San Diego-based health care facility, opted to use personal communications services rather than cellular for its mobile communications needs. The company purchased several hundred PCS phones from Pacific Bell Mobile Services for its executives and health care professionals. Pacific Bell launched PCS service in San Diego in November.
Wireless One of North Carolina L.L.C. won the right to use frequencies owned by the University of North Carolina to develop a state-wide multichannel multipoint distribution service/instructional television fixed service network. The contract allows Wireless One to build wireless cable systems across the state using UNC’s granted and applied for frequencies, the company said. Previous company estimates place Wireless One of North Carolina’s aggregated spectrum at more than 1 million line-of-site households. The UNC frequencies will enable the company to reach 900,000 additional line of site households in the state. Wireless One of North Carolina is a joint venture of Wireless One L.L.C. and CT Communications.
