AT DEADLINE: WESTERN WIRELESS LAUNCHES IN N.M.

Western Wireless Corp. launched its personal communications services network in El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, N.M. The system is branded VoiceStream.

The new PCS markets are part of the Albuquerque, N.M., major trading area, the company said. It launched its Global System for Mobile communications PCS service in metropolitan Albuquerque in July.

“In addition to providing wireless services that are reliable and affordable, we will be able to offer travelers coverage in all the major cities in New Mexico,” said Western Wireless Chairman and chief executive officer John Stanton.

The VoiceStream service combines a wireless phone, a pager and an answering machine in a single handset. Features of the service include caller ID, call waiting, two-way text messaging, improved sound quality and digital encryption.

VoiceStream phones will be available in three retail outlets in El Paso and one store in Las Cruces.

Western Wireless also offers VoiceStream in Honolulu, Salt Lake City, Portland, Ore., Des Moines, Iowa, and Oklahoma City.
