WASHINGTON-The Strategis Group announced it expects wireless phone service to become just as “ubiquitous as traditional wireline residential service,” in the United States within five to seven years.
“The increased distribution, lower pricing and increase in diversity of services resulting from PCS competition will be a major force enabling the wireless industry to become universal,” commented Andy Roscoe, president and chairman of Strategis, in the firm’s recent report, “U.S. PCS Marketplace: 1997.”
The company said that while cellular subscriber growth has stabilized, PCS is expected to fuel total wireless subscriber growth by adding about 47 million subscribers during the next five years.
By 2001, total wireless phone penetration is expected to reach about 40 percent of the population, or 55 percent of U.S. households, predicts Strategis.
