Cellular One offers DPCS in Bay area

Cellular One said it will begin offering digital cellular service branded Digital PCS in the San Francisco Bay area today. In conjunction with the launch, Cellular One is premiering a simplified rate plan and an off-the-shelf retail package.

Features of the service include a cellular phone, voice mail and paging capabilities. In addition, Cellular One said Digital PCS offers extended battery life, fraud prevention and caller ID.

Customers will have access to AT&T Wireless Services Inc.’s Digital PCS network while travelling.

Qualcomm files Ericsson lawsuit

Qualcomm Inc. has filed a lawsuit against Ericsson Inc. alleging patent infringement based on public statements made by Ericsson that it intends to offer Code Division Multiple Access handsets in the United States.

Qualcomm said Ericsson has been licensed to manufacture CDMA handsets for the Globalstar satellite communications system, but it has not been granted a license for cellular, personal communications services or other terrestrial applications.

The lawsuit, filed in San Diego, charges Ericsson with infringement of seven Qualcomm patents.
