ATLANTA-BellSouth Corp. purchased a 61 percent interest in Otecel, one of two nationwide wireless telephone companies in Ecuador.
BellSouth acquired the interest by buying all of the shares of the company’s two largest shareholders, Planer Overseas Corp. and Discovery Inc. Otecel began service under its nationwide license in 1994 and now serves more than 30,000 customers with a network covering 60 percent of the Ecuadorian population, BellSouth said.
Otecel operates under the brand name “Cellular Power.” In addition to cellular service, Otecel has licenses to provide national and international long-distance service to its wireless subscribers.
