HARARE, Zimbabwe-Telecel International Ltd. was awarded a license to build a national Global System for Mobile communications cellular network in Zimbabwe.
Telecel-Zimbabwe, Telecel’s local partner, plans to launch commercial service in the greater Harare area within nine months, the company said. Service in the future will be extended to five cities near Harare and Bulawayo, the country’s second largest city.
“This is a tremendous benefit for the residents of Zimbabwe,” said Miko Rwayitare, co-founder of Telecel International. “With a wireless telecommunications system identical to digital systems in Europe, Zimbabwe will be able to compete in the global market.”
Telecel-Zimbabwe said it will invest more than $50 million over the next five years to provide wireless service in at least 30 cities across Zimbabwe.
