AMSC DEVELOPING REMOTE PAY PHONES

RESTON, Va.-American Mobile Satellite Corp. and International Connectors and Cable Corp. have teamed up to develop a system of pay phones for remote locations where wireless and wireline service is not available.

ICC developed the pay phones, which will operate on AMSC’s Skycell Satellite Telephone Service. The phones will accept SkyMinutes calling cards as well as commercial credit cards by the second half of the year, the companies said.

One pay phone has been installed in Tortilla Flat, an Arizona town 60 miles east of Phoenix. Residents of the town used to have to travel to the next town in order to use a phone.

“Tortilla Flat is a prime example of the benefits SkyCell service can bring to remote areas,” said Robert Goldsmith, executive vice president and chief operating officer of AMSC.

“It has not only improved the efficiency of those who work there but also provided residents and tourists with secure communication links during emergencies,” he said.
