PALO ALTO, Calif.-Corsair Communications Inc. said it activated its real-time fraud prevention system for users roaming between Mexico and the United States.
The company’s PhonePrint Roaming Network has been operational within U.S. borders since October. The latest roaming activation with Telcel of Mexico extends protection into Mexico.
PhonePrint uses radiofrequency fingerprinting to detect and automatically disconnect calls made from cloned phones.
“Well over 10 million cellular users are already effectively protected against cloning in U.S. markets,” said Tom Meyer, Corsair’s vice president of operations. “Last week, we connected Telcel’s PhonePrint system to that network, and we’ve already seen a number of international cloners getting zapped in U.S. cities.”
David Thompson, vice president of marketing for Corsair, said international protection will allow carriers to grant international roaming privileges more widely.
“Several carriers had restricted roaming between the United States and Mexico because of high fraud rates,” he said. “The PhonePrint Roaming Network will enable them to develop a source of new revenue without fear of wholesale fraud. In the end, more end users will enjoy more complete roaming service.”
