MOTOROLA, NOKIA TO DEVELOP HANDSET

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill.-Motorola Inc. and Nokia Corp. said they will develop a prototype digital handset for NTT DoCoMo in Japan based on wideband Code Division Multiple Access technology.

NTT recently announced it plans to implement wideband CDMA technology by 2000. L.M. Ericsson and Lucent Technologies Inc. were among the vendors selected last month to develop an experimental W-CDMA system capable of delivering high speed multimedia services. The system will include services such as full-motion video, video conferencing and Internet access. Ericsson’s W-CDMA solution uses 5 megahertz and in tests transmits data at 144 kilobits per second, a speed Ericsson wants to improve to 384 kbps.

Once a specification for the technology is set, Ericsson said it also will focus its efforts on developing a W-CDMA handset.
