TORONTO-Microcell Telecommunications Inc. signed a handful of new roaming agreements with European operators, and announced its Fido personal communications services network will be active in Toronto starting next week.
Microcell Connexions Inc., the network subsidiary of Microcell Telecommunications, signed roaming agreements with Global System for Mobile communications and Digital Cellular System 1800 operators Cellnet, Orange plc and Vodafone Group plc of the United Kingdom; Esat Digifone of Ireland, Telefonica Moviles of Spain, Libertel of the Netherlands, Tele Danmark of Denmark, Comviq of Sweden, Eurotel Praha of the Czech Republic, Telsim of Turkey and EMT of Estonia.
Microcell Connexions also said it completed agreements with France Telecom Mobiles Liban of Lebanon, Gibtel of Gibralter and Satelindo of Indonesia. Fido service will be available in these countries third quarter, added Microcell.
Fido is a GSM-based PCS service-the first in Canada at 1.9 GHz-currently operating in Montreal, Ottawa-Hull, Ontario, and Quebec City, Quebec.
“Our network provides increased capacity, which is a major advantage in an urban centre the size of Toronto,” said Andre Tremblay, president and chief executive officer of Microcell Telecom.
Fido currently is being offered for $40 per month, including 400 minutes of airtime billed by the second. Additional airtime is billed at a rate of 20 cents per minute.
